Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | SUMMARY Nothing is acquired for ever : About the permanence of a subject of controversy From the sixties to the nineties, infant psychology had been characterised by the production of a great deal of new data. For a long time, these new facts caused more admiring or sceptical reactions than theoretical discussions. This situation seems to be changing because two English language reviews recently published a series of viewpoints about the current knowledge in infant psychology. In these papers, a very hard controversy is going on. First it is a dispute about nativism and the opposition between nativism and empiricism, but it is also a debate about the interpretation of the observations made in experiments with infants. Cognitive interpretations (specially object permanence) are questioned and opposed to perceptual interpretations judged by their authors to be more parsimonious. The participants in theses debates are some of the main actors in infancy research in the United States of America. These texts are summarised in the present paper and confronted to the theoretical point of view of the author. |
