| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa cryptobiose est un état de vie ralentie grâce auquel certaines espèces appartenant à des groupes divers s’avèrent capables de résister à des conditions de vie inhabituelles, pendant parfois de très longues durées. L’organisme en cryptobiose montre des modifications structurales considérables, ainsi qu’une réduction de son activité métabolique au point que celle-ci soit dans certains cas indécelable. L’exemple des tardigrades permet de dégager les modalités de cet état biologique, ainsi que celles du retour à la vie active.Outre ces aspects, l’étude de la cryptobiose engendre un questionnement sur la signification évolutive de cet état et également, de manière plus fondamentale, sur les limites de la notion de vivant. |

| Summary, etc. | Cryptobiosis is a slow paced state of life in which certain species that belong to various groups have proved to be able to live in inhabitual life conditions, often for very long periods of time. An organism in cryptobiosis shows structural modifications often remarkable, as well as a reduction of metabolic activity to the point at which certain cases are undetectable. The examples of tardigrades facilitate the understanding of the forms of this biological state as well as the return to an active life.Other than these aspects, the study of cryptobiosis generates questions about the evolutional significance of this state and also, on a more fundamental level, questions about the limits of the notion of living. |
