| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa vague contemporaine d’extinctions d’espèces, provoquée en grande partie directement ou indirectement par les humains, constitue un péril majeur pour la biodiversité. De nombreuses recherches scientifiques, notamment en écologie et en paléontologie, ont permis de mieux comprendre les mécanismes complexes et les conséquences de ce phénomène qui existe depuis l’origine de la vie. Les données scientifiques ne constituent cependant qu’un aspect des interrogations multiformes qui gravitent autour de ce phénomène écologique et évolutif, et il est apparu indispensable de se pencher sur les dimensions à la fois ontologiques et morales de ce phénomène et des concepts qui le structurent. Ainsi, les articulations du concept d’extinction avec la notion de mort individuelle ou encore avec les questions liées à la nature de l’espèce permettent de jeter un regard nouveau sur la problématique ontologique de l’extinction. Enfin, la dernière partie de cet article présente quelques tentatives pour comprendre comment une relation éthique peut s’instaurer entre l’espèce humaine et les autres espèces, soit déjà éteintes, soit menacées d’extinction. |

| Summary, etc. | The contemporary wave of species extinctions, directly or indirectly induced by human activities, constitutes a major threat for biodiversity. Significant scientific research, particularly in ecology and paleontology, has resulted in a deeper understanding of the complex causes and consequences of this process that has been going on since the appearance of life on Earth. However, the scientific data constitute only one aspect of the multiform interrogations revolving around this evolutionary and ecological phenomenon, and it would seem time to question the ontological and moral aspects of this problem and of the concepts which support it. Thus, the connections between the notion of species extinction and the concepts of individual death as well as the different meanings of the term “species” allow us to give an original account of this ontological debate.Finally, the last part of the article is devoted to the presentation of two attempts focused on establishing a better ethical understanding between the human species and other species, extinct or on the brink of extinction. |
