| Summary, etc. | Les élections municipales dans les communes de moins de 1 000 habitants sont encore peu l’objet d’analyses systématiques. Or, l’étude des configurations électorales (entendues comme mises en scène des oppositions entre candidats en amont de l’expression des suffrages) permet de réinterroger les conditions de la participation électorale à ces scrutins de proximité dans les communes rurales. En mobilisant une approche empirique de type quantitatif sur le département des Alpes-Maritimes lors les municipales de 2020, cet article met en évidence la diversité des compétitions dans ces petites communes et les effets croisés de la taille de la commune (dont le nombre de sièges à pouvoir est un indicateur) et des types de configuration sur les niveaux d’abstention. |

| Summary, etc. | With regards to French municipal elections, municipalities with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants have received less attention than their more urban counterparts. However, the study of electoral configurations provides an opportunity to revisit higher turnout, which is traditionally associated with representations of elections in ‘small’ political scenes. Based on an empirical case study of the 2020 municipal elections in the department of Alpes-Maritimes in Southern France, this article highlights the diversity of electoral configurations in small municipalities. Moreover, it shows that such electoral configurations have a significant effect on levels of abstention in those municipalities, independent from and alongside their size. |
