| Summary, etc. | RésuméSi l'anthropologie a récemment développé une réflexion sur l'usage qu?elle fait de la notion de « terrain », et sur l'histoire de celle-ci, elle a négligé la dimension géologique de la métaphore. Ceci ne peut que retenir l'attention d?un ethnographe intéressé par les modes de recherche de l'eau souterraine : il rencontre des hydrogéologues, des sourciers et leurs clients, pour qui également « le terrain » correspond à une variété de pratiques et de préoccupations. Toute métaphore est dans une certaine mesure « minée », et celle du terrain ne l'est pas plus qu?une autre. Néanmoins, il convient d?examiner les implications de la séduction qu?elle opère sur les anthropologues, ainsi que la façon dont nous l'utilisons pour articuler notre discours sur les représentations occidentales des activités productrices et organisatrices de connaissance. |

| Summary, etc. | While anthropology has recently started analysing the use it makes of the notion of « field » and, in particular, of its history, the geological connotation of this metaphor has not, so far, been scrutinized. This state of things was bound to attract the attention of an ethnographer interested in the search for underground water : he meets hydrogeologists, dowsers and their clients, for whom « the field » also corresponds to a variety of practices and preoccupations. Any metaphor is, to some extent, « mined » and that of the field not more so than others. Still, it appears advisable to examine the implications of the attraction which it has exerted on anthropologists and the ways in which we use it to express our Western representations of productive and organizational activities in the domain of knowledge. |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungDie Anthropologie hat zwar in letzter Zeit Überlegungen darüber angestellt, wie sie den Begriff des « Feldes » verwendet und wie es dazu gekommen ist, hat aber die geologische Seite der Metapher ausser acht gelassen. Dies muss einen Ethnographen, der sich mit der Suche nach Wasser im Boden befasst, stutzig machen : er trifft auf Hydrogeologen, auf Rutengänger und ihre Kunden, für die « das Feld » ebenfalls eine Vielzahl von Aktivitäten und Überlegungen darstellt. Jede Metapher ist in gewissem Sinne « geladen », und die des Feldes nicht stärker als andere. Dennoch ist es ratsam, die Auswirkungen der Verführung, die diese Metapher auf die Anthropologen ausübt, zu prüfen, und auch die Art, wie wir sie im Westen in unserer Rede über die Wiedergabe von Wissen schaffenden und Wissen ordnenden Aktivitäten verwenden. |
