| Summary, etc. | L’instruction occupe une place centrale dans la pensée des physiocrates, qui la considèrent une condition essentielle du maintien de l’ordre social et du ressort économique du pays et, par cela, du bonheur des hommes. Leur doctrine pédagogique, qui se fonde sur la diffusion des connaissances utiles et d’un savoir pratique, se rapproche des idées énoncées, au début du XIXe siècle, au sein de la Société d’encouragement pour l’industrie nationale (SEIN), notamment au sujet de l’instruction des classes laborieuses. Imprégnées d’un même souci d’utilité pratique et d’une même perspective philanthropique, les idées pédagogiques des physiocrates et celles des membres de la SEIN se situent à l’origine du « paternalisme industriel » qui sera pratiqué en France au long du XIXe siècle. |

| Summary, etc. | The origins of ‘‘industrial paternalism’’. Industrial education in the Physiocratic thought and in the‘‘ Société d’encouragement pour l’industrie nationale’’Instruction played a central role in the thinking of the Physiocrats. Those philosophers considered it an essential condition for the maintenance of social order and for promoting a strong economy and thereby of the happiness of human beings. Their educational philosophy, which was based on the diffusion of useful and pragmatic knowledge, contained similarities with the ideas expressed at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the Société d’encouragement pour l’industrie nationale ( SEIN), especially regarding the education of the working classes. Permeated by the same concern with pragmatic utility and the same philanthropic perspective, the educational ideas of the Physiocrats and those of members of the SEIN were at the origin of the ‘‘industrial paternalism’’ that would be practiced in France throughout the nineteenth century. |
