| Summary, etc. | Jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle, les excréments produits par la population de Lyon étaient soit puisés dans les fosses par les maîtres des basses œuvres qui les déversaient dans les cours d’eau, soit ramassés dans les rues par des paysans qui les utilisaient comme engrais. La nouvelle sensibilité aux odeurs et les progrès du discours médical suscitèrent après 1750 des préoccupations d’édilité spécifiques, l’autorité municipale s’appuyant sur les travaux de l’académie des sciences de Lyon. Ceci suscita l’éclosion d’entreprises de vidange proposant des techniques améliorées et un recyclage continu, ce qui répondait aux préoccupations des membres des sociétés d’agriculture. La ville utilisa alors plusieurs de ses faubourgs comme lieux de stockage, ce qui engendra de fortes résistances. |

| Summary, etc. | Until the 18th century, excrement produced by the inhabitants of Lyon were either drawn out of the cesspits by the dirty work masters, who would discharge them in the rivers, or collected by peasants to be used as fertilizer. Sensibility to odours and the evolution of medical discourse created after 1750 new concerns for local ediles with the municipal authority basing their actions on the works produced by the Lyon Academy of Sciences. The result was a flowering of draining companies using improved techniques and continuous recycling, thus satisfying the needs of members of agricultural societies. The town then used several suburbs as storage areas, which produced a strong level of resistance. |
