| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | Life cycle of patents and determinants of their renewalPatenting and renewal is a way for a firm to assert a portion of the value of its intangible assets by giving them a legal value and possibly a book value (IAS 38.IFRS). Thus, firms report to financial markets the proper use of financial resources committed particularly to the R&D.The aim of our study is the identification of factors favoring the renewal or abandonment of a patent. Our results have identified a mean age of 13-year for the patent’s cohort 1989-2009, and defined three strategic phases of the patents’ life cycle: abandonment of procedure, natural abandonment, and late withdrawal. We can also build expectations on the maintenance of a patent on the basis of two main variables: the time of issuance time and the cumulative number of citations. It is also noteworthy that most patents cited by subsequent patents are those which have had the longest examining procedure for issuing and are later the most sustainably maintained. |
