| Summary, etc. | Le roman graphique Der Boxer (2012) de Reinhard Kleist raconte la vie de Hertzko Haft. Ce Juif polonais, déporté dans divers camps de concentration, a participé à des combats de boxe entre détenus pour littéralement sauver sa vie. Les expériences faites pendant la Shoah sont considérées comme indicibles et apparaissent comme une épreuve particulièrement difficile pour ceux qui veulent en parler. La fidélité à la réalité, par respect pour les victimes, s’oppose à l’impossibilité d’être précis et de rendre tangible le vécu. Avec son adaptation de la biographie de Haft, Kleist parvient à trouver des images pour représenter l’irreprésentable. La présente contribution analyse la relation entre réalité et fiction dans Der Boxer et montre que le roman graphique oscille entre deux tendances : Kleist demeure fidèle à son exigence d’authenticité qu’il revendique, en restant au plus près possible du matériau biographique pour reconstituer les événements qui ont eu lieu pendant la Shoah. Afin de mettre à jour ces expériences de l’indicible, Kleist se concentre sur les émotions du protagoniste et donne à voir les horreurs de la persécution grâce à des aplats noirs et des dessins expressifs qui se différencient du style utilisé par ailleurs. En imaginant l’univers intérieur du personnage, l’auteur suggère des résonances entre des expériences de vie et représente avec une clarté croissante le travail de mémoire à l’œuvre ici. |

| Summary, etc. | The graphic novel Der Boxer (2012) by Reinhard Kleist tells the story of Hertzko Haft’s life. The Polish Jew literally fought for his life by fighting against other prisoners in concentration camps. Experiences of the Shoah are classified as ‘unsagbar’ (unspeakable) and challenge those who want to bear witness to them. The creation of realistic depictions out of respect for the victims clashes with the impossibility of conveying the experience of these horrors precisely and tangibly. In his graphic novel Kleist illustrates unrepresentable moments of Haft’s biography. This article investigates the relationship between reality and fiction in Der Boxer and demonstrates that it oscillates between both: Kleist’s illustrations of Haft’s experiences with the Shoah accomplish his claim of authenticity by staying close to his biography. When he depicts unrepresentable experiences he focusses on the emotions of the protagonist and expresses the horror of the Shoah with black areas and expressive drawings which differ from the otherwise prevalent style. With imaginations of Haft’s inner space Kleist suggests correlations between different moments in Haft’s life. The style of those dream sequences develops throughout the novel and represents the increase of clarity in Haft’s process of memories. |

Der polnische Jude kämpfte in Konzentrationslagern buchstäblich um sein Leben, indem er an Boxduellen zwischen Häftlingen teilnahm. Erfahrungen, die während der Shoah gesammelt wurden, gelten als unsagbar und stellen besonders hohe Anforderungen an diejenigen, die von ihnen berichten wollen. Realitätstreue aus Respekt vor den Opfern steht der Unmöglichkeit von Präzision und greifbarer Vermittlung des Durchlebten gegenüber. Mit der Adaption von Hafts Biografie findet Kleist Bilder für das Undarstellbare. Der Beitrag untersucht das Verhältnis von Realität und Fiktion in Der Boxer und zeigt, dass die Graphic Novel dazwischen oszilliert: Kleist bleibt seinem expliziten Authentizitätsanspruch treu, indem er sich mit seiner Gestaltung der Begebenheiten während der Shoah nah an die biografische Vorlage hält. Um Erfahrungen mit dem Unsagbaren zu zeigen, fokussiert Kleist sich auf die Emotionen des Protagonisten und vermittelt das Grauen der Verfolgung mit schwarzen Flächen und expressiven Zeichnungen, die von dem sonstigen Stil differieren. Mit imaginierten Innensichten suggeriert Kleist Zusammenhänge zwischen den Lebenserfahrungen und veranschaulicht durch eine zunehmende Klarheit in deren Darstellung den Verarbeitungsprozess von Erinnerungen. |
