| Summary, etc. | Dès le milieu du XXe siècle, les scientifiques n’ont cessé de rechercher les composantes d’une vieillesse qui serait réussie ou active. En ce début de XXIe siècle, la recherche de ces indicateurs reste d’actualité et le successful aging s’est érigé en paradigme gérontologique à travers les politiques nationales et internationales. La réalisation d’une revue de littérature sur le successful aging offre l’opportunité de revenir sur l’émergence de ce paradigme dominant et d’identifier les principales composantes du successful aging. Les résultats démontrent que ces dernières ne sauraient se limiter qu’à la santé fonctionnelle et cognitive. La multidimensionnalité du successful aging met en exergue la complexité des dimensions influant sur les expériences du vieillir : fonctionnelle, psychique, sociale, spirituelle, environnementale, etc. La littérature gérontologique se montre également critique quant à l’évaluation des situations des personnes âgées au regard des composantes du successful aging. Les représentations de ce que serait un vieillissement réussi diffèrent d’une société à une autre, d’une culture à une autre. Face aux limites relevées, l’article propose un cadre d’analyse exploratoire des vulnérabilités pour évaluer les composantes du bien-être des personnes dans la vieillesse. |

| Summary, etc. | Since the mid-20th century, scientist has been searching the components of successful or active aging. At the beginning of the 21st century, demographic aging is now a global issue and successful aging has emerged as a gerontological paradigm through nation and international policies. Conducting a comprehensive review of scientific literature on this paradigm offers the opportunity to identify the key components of successful aging. Based on the results of this approach, we show that the components are not limited to the functional and cognitive health of individuals. Multidimensionality of successful aging highlights the complexity of factors influencing the experiences of aging, and the variety of dimensions involved: functional, psychological, social, spiritual or environmental. Representations and aspirations of what would be successful aging differ from one society to another, from culture to another. The article proposes a framework for an exploratory analysis of the vulnerabilities of elderly not to assess the success of aging, but to capture the components of the well-being of people in old age. |
