| Summary, etc. | À partir d’entretiens et d’observations, l’article interroge le rapport au quartier de personnes âgées de plus de 80 ans habitant dans un vaste ensemble pavillonnaire. Les personnes âgées, résidant pour la plupart depuis de longues années au sein de leur quartier, considèrent celui-ci comme un espace de vie où il est possible d’ancrer son identité personnelle et sociale. Mais l’approche développée souligne également toute la pluralité et les nuances qu’il faut retenir pour saisir le rapport pluriel qui lie les plus « anciens » à leur quartier et à ses habitants. Aussi est-il mis en évidence combien le quartier devient étrange à mesure qu’il s’agrandit et combien en même temps il revêt les atours d’un village où il fait bon vivre dans son centre historique. Dans ce sens, le propos souligne de quelle manière le quartier est un support du quotidien à travers de multiples sociabilités informelles qui compensent des solidarités de voisinage distantes. Le quartier procure au final un sentiment d’existence à des personnes souffrant souvent de solitude en leur offrant un cadre social et territorial familier. Autrement dit, il participe pleinement du capital social et spatial des aînés qui y vivent, tout en garantissant une place dans le monde. |

| Summary, etc. | Based on interviews and observations, the article questions the relationship of senior citizens over 80 years with their vast urban neighbourhood of detached houses. The senior citizens, living for the most part for a long time within their district, consider this one as a living space where it is possible to anchor personal and social identity. But the approach developed here underlines all the plurality and the nuances necessary to understand the plural relationship which attaches the “oldest” to their district and to the inhabitants. The article shows how much the district becomes strange as it gets bigger and how much at the same time it looks like a village where life is enjoyable in the historic centre. In this sense, the article shows how the area is a support of everyday life particularly through multiple informal sociability types, which in turn compensate for neighbourhood solidarity that hardly exists. The district promotes a feeling of existence to people often experiencing solitude by offering them a familiar social and territorial frame. In other words, the district benefits from the social and spatial capital of the senior citizens who live there whilst ensuring a place in the world. |
