Summary, etc. | Au cœur de la redécouverte d’individus privés de visibilité, le concept d’agentivité ( agency) n’a encore été que rarement appliqué aux enfants et jeunes gens de l’époque moderne. Pourtant son potentiel herméneutique apparaît évident. De l’enfance à l’âge adulte, les individus sont engagés dans un processus de construction d’eux-mêmes dans lequel ils cherchent à affirmer leur individualité face aux adultes et au monde. En ouvrant la réflexion sur l’expérience enfantine et les pouvoirs d’action de la jeunesse (entre adaptation et résistance) en France et dans les pays voisins (Suisse, Allemagne), et ce sur un temps long (XVIe-milieu du XIXe siècle), et en travaillant sur un large panel de sources – des textes classiques de l’histoire de l’éducation aux écrits personnels de jeunesse – ce dossier entend mettre en lumière la façon dont les enfants ont agi au sein des structures sociales. Ce faisant, il s’attache à révéler enfants et jeunes gens comme des acteurs et actrices historiques à part entière. |

Summary, etc. | At the heart of the rediscovery of “invisible” individuals lies the concept of agency. This has, however, rarely been applied to children and young people of the modern era until now. Yet, although it has been overlooked, its hermeneutical potential is obvious. From childhood to adulthood, individuals are engaged in a process of self-construction, by which they aim to assert their individuality when facing adults and the world at large. This dossier fosters reflection on the experiences of children and the agency of youth (between adapting and resisting) in France and neighbouring countries (Switzerland and Germany) over a long period of time (from the sixteenth to mid-nineteenth century), using a wide range of sources from the history of education classical texts to adolescents’ personal writings. It thereby aims to shed light on how children and young people acted within social structures and to reveal them as historical agents in their own right. |
