520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | 19thCentury criminal anthropology has defined tattoos as near-autobiographical inscriptions. This article aims at studying the epistemological strength and limitations of this idea. It sheds light on the specificities of tattoos as pieces of writing, through the analysis of registers and forms where the “distinguishing features” of women’s bodies have been systematically written down. Bodies are crossed-out, exposed and interpreted through tattooing, and emerge both as notebooks, banners, and sensitive surfaces. |
