520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This article evaluates the quantitative validity of transitionist and symbiotic narratives about the role of wood in 20th century European economies in relation to forestry extraction conditions. While wood consumption in Europe increased by 70% from 1913 to 2005, over the same period, the volume of wood in forests also grew by 150%. Using a counterfactual method, linking the modelling of annual wood production in forests based on pre-existing standing stock to alternative consumption scenarios, we show that the accumulation of wood was made possible by a shift in the nature of forestry extraction in the 20th century through substitution effects and symbiosis with other materials and fossil fuels. |
