| Summary, etc. | Au tournant du xxe siècle en France, les fédérations ouvrières s’emploient à construire et diffuser des savoirs et des expertises sur le travail. Le recours à la statistique et aux enquêtes possède alors un objectif de légitimation du mouvement syndical dans l’espace social. Cet article analyse plusieurs pratiques des fédérations à des fins de revendication : la mise en place d’enquêtes internes, la remise en cause des enquêtes et des chiffres produits par des organisations externes au mouvement ouvrier et la négociation des codifications juridiques des professions. Il met en lumière une tension dans la revendication d’une expertise du travail par les fédérations, entre usage et remise en cause de ces modes d’objectivation du monde social. |

| Summary, etc. | At the dawn of the 20th century in France, the workers’ union federations sought to build and share knowledge and expertise on labour, using statistics and surveys to legitimize the trade union movement in the social and the political arenas. This article analyses several practices adopted by the federations to support their claims. These include setting up internal surveys, challenging the surveys and statistics produced by organizations outside the labour movement, and negotiating the classifications of occupations that underpinned labour laws. It highlights a tension in the federations’ claim to expertise on labour, between the use of these modes of objectification of the social world and a questioning of their validity. |
