| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | This article studies transformations in the careers of magistrates in the government of the Spanish Indies during the eighteenth century. Under Philip V (1701-1746) and Charles III (1759-1788), knowledge of American affairs was valued in choosing judges, and within a few years, the Council of the Indies and the House of Trade were composed of experts in the field. Synchronously, these changes shaped a new cursus honorum that integrated careers that were previously disconnected. The Audiencias, the House of Trade and the Council of the Indies formed the stages of a complete cursus honorum, unique in the Western world. |
