520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In the 19th-century French countryside, conflicts between mayors and parish priests as well as their respective supporters were very frequent, especially in the Haut-Quercy. But these quarrels were just a particular case among others of a type of factionalist disputes, spliting the village into two rival parties. The issue at stake was often a local matter, but may also have had a more political aspect. Yet, the politicization of the village dispute during the 19th century should not be seen as the outcome of a linear process. This paper also deals with the question of the formation of local parties. The author tries to estimate to what extent the position of the village inhabitants in the local web of solidarities explains their affiliation to either one or another faction.
