520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Under the Old Regime, a protestant community organized itself in Asnières, a small village near the city of Bourges. In this village, most people devoted themselves to the growing of vineyards. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the protestants kept resisting for several reasons : their specific and independent way of life, a less important religious persecution in the area, the insufficient number of catholic priests, and a level of emigration lower than elsewhere. From a stricktly professional point of view, the two communities succeeded in coexisting depite some tensions that can mainly be explained by the superior wealth of the huguenot families. As far as religion is concerned, they both coexisted as well. The calvinist worship still went on, but the protestants accepted catholic baptism and, under special circumstances, wedding services. However, they steadfastly maintained they refusal to conform when it came to the behavior and beliefs with which death should be faced. The Asnières protestant wine growers provide one example among others of a reformed rural community which was still resisting in the 18th century.
