Summary, etc. RésuméL’objectif de cet article est double. D’une part, il s’agit de faire la synthèse des débats qui traversent le champ de l’économie financière en ce qui concerne la question de l’autosuffisance des institutions de microfinance. D’autre part, il s’agit de dépasser l’opposition traditionnelle entre ces deux conceptions en montrant qu’elles correspondent à deux phases du développement de la microfinance. La pérennité des programmes de microfinance suppose ainsi de mettre en relief les complémentarités relevées entre ces deux conceptions.

Summary, etc. First this paper provides a selective survey and synthesis of recent debates in upon financial economics concerning microfinance institutions sustainability. Secondly, it puts them into perspective, suggesting a conciliation of these two conceptions and showing they are two steps of the development of microfinance. Poverty allievationalleviation among financially and socially excluded can only be achieved by focusing on links between these two conceptions.
