520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | After a review of the literature on bovine and ovine epidemics from 1700 to 1850, we examine the successive meanings of the word épizootie since its first use in 1765. The major contagious epizootics are introduced by disease. A chronology and the distribution throughout the country is given for each disease. The xviiith Century, which was dominated by four devastating waves of Cattle Plague is compared to the first half of the xixth Century, when Foot and mouth disease, Pleuro-pneumonia and Sheep-pox became more common and widespread. Glossanthrax, of some concern, but mostly inconsequential, disappeared spontaneously towards the end of the xviiith Century. Other epizootics are taken in account due to their significant presence in certain regions e.g. Anthrax, Pourriture, Mange of the sheep as well as Maladie Rouge in Sologne. |
