| Summary, etc. | Le but de cet article est d’explorer les modèles explicatifs proposés par les professionnels de santé mentale et auxquels adhèrent les familles des malades dans leur quête de sens, et de soulever, par là même, les transformations que ce discours scientifique va subir et les usages sociaux qui en seront faits par les familles. La recherche s’est déroulée au niveau de l’hôpital psychiatrique Arrazi de Salé. Des entretiens semi-directifs ont été réalisés auprès de 30 membres de familles et 28 professionnels de santé mentale. L’analyse thématique a fait ressortir que les familles adhèrent aux explications psychiatriques quand le diagnostic arrive à localiser le mal, autrement dit, quand le diagnostic met en cause une origine organique et offre le traitement adéquat. Aussi, ces explications sont acceptées par les familles quand elles permettent à ces dernières de donner sens au malheur qu’elles vivent ou de se disculper de toute responsabilité dans l’émergence de la maladie. |

| Summary, etc. | The purpose of this article is to explore, on the one hand, the explanatory models offered by mental health professionals to patients’ families and to which the latter adhere in their quest for meaning, and to examine, on the other hand, the transformations that the medical/scientific discourse undergoes and the social uses that these families make of it. The research took place at Arrazi de Salé psychiatric hospital. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with thirty members of patients’ families and twenty-eight mental health professionals. The thematic analysis indicates that families adhere to psychiatric explanations when the diagnosis manages to locate the origin of the affliction, that is, when the diagnosis identifies an organic origin and offers satisfactory treatment. Moreover, these medical explanations are accepted by the families insofar as they allow them to give meaning to their experiences of distress, or to exculpate themselves of any responsibility linked to the emergence of the disease of their relatives. |

| Summary, etc. | El objetivo de este artículo es explorar los modelos explicativos propuestos por los profesionales de la salud mental y a los que suscriben las familias de los pacientes en su búsqueda de sentido, y plantear, al mismo tiempo, las transformaciones que experimentará este discurso científico y los usos sociales que harán de él las familias. La investigación tuvo lugar en el hospital psiquiátrico Arrazi de Salé. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas con 30 familiares y 28 profesionales de la salud mental. El análisis temático reveló que las familias suscriben a las explicaciones psiquiátricas cuando el diagnóstico consigue localizar la dolencia, es decir, cuando el diagnóstico atribuye una causa orgánica y ofrece un tratamiento adecuado. Estas explicaciones también son aceptadas por las familias cuando les permiten, o bien dar sentido a la desgracia que están viviendo, o bien eximirse de cualquier responsabilidad en la aparición de la enfermedad. |
