| Summary, etc. | Philippe, seigneur de Ternant, issu de la noblesse du comté de Nevers, conquit très tôt une place éminente à la cour du duc de Bourgogne Philippe le Bon : conseiller et chambellan de ce prince, chevalier de l’ordre de la Toison d’or de la première promotion, homme de guerre et diplomate, il apparaît comme appartenant au premier cercle du pouvoir au sein de l’État bourguignon. Il jouissait de la faveur du duc qui lui octroya des dons importants et favorisa son mariage avec Isabelle de Roye, représentante de la haute noblesse de Picardie. Ami et protecteur des chroniqueurs Georges Chastelain et Olivier de La Marche, il doit à ces deux écrivains une réputation flatteuse. Pourtant certaines sources financières ou judiciaires montrent qu’il se rendit coupable d’actes délictueux, de détournements de fonds et de violations des trêves, car si ce chevalier était sans peur, il n’était pas sans reproche. |

| Summary, etc. | Philip, lord of Ternant, nobleman of the county of Nevers, achieved an eminent place at the court of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy quite early in the day: councillor and chamberlain of the duke, elected a knight of the Golden Fleece at the point the order was created, he was also man of war and a diplomat, and occupied a place at the very peak of the Burgundian State. He enjoyed the favour of the duke who granted him important gifts as well as encouraging his marriage to Isabelle de Roye, who belonged to the high nobility of Picardy. Friend and protector of the chroniclers Georges Chastelain and Olivier de La Marche, he owes his flattering reputation to these two writers. Some financial or judicial sources, however, show that he was guilty of criminal acts, embezzlement and truce violations. Whilst this knight may have been fearless, he was not without reproach. |
