| Summary, etc. | André III, maître de la puissante seigneurie de Vitré entreprit la reconstruction de son château et la construction de la première enceinte urbaine en pierre dont subsiste une large partie. La documentation date avec précision les travaux dans le second quart du xiiie siècle et laisse envisager les conséquences urbanistiques pour l’agglomération. Au-delà, le contexte politique et diplomatique permet de comprendre cette entreprise très précoce en Bretagne. Le seigneur de Vitré, puissant vassal du duc de Bretagne, maître d’une seigneurie à la frontière avec le royaume, joue un jeu complexe avec le duc et s’appuie sur le roi qui voit la possibilité de s’immiscer dans les affaires du duché et finance largement les travaux du baron. |

| Summary, etc. | Andrew III, master of the powerful barony of Vitré, undertook the reconstruction of his castle as well as the building of the first urban enclosure in stone, of which a large part remains today. Surviving documents allow accurate dating for works in the second quarter of 13th century and permit us to assess the effects on the town. In addition, the political and diplomatic context helps us understand this early development within Brittany. The lord of Vitré, a powerful vassal of the duke and ruler of a lordship on the frontier with the kingdom of France, played a complex game with the duke and looked to the king for support. The king, seeing an opportunity to interfere in duchy affairs, made substantial financial contributions to the building costs. |
