| Summary, etc. | La peur des inhumations en état de mort apparente, développée par les médecins à partir du xviiie siècle, a conduit à la création d’un service de vérification médicale des décès à Paris dès 1800. Renforcé par un système d’inspection, ce service a pour mission de s’assurer de la réalité de la mort ; s’y ajoutent progressivement des tâches qui relèvent de la police médicale et de la pédagogie de l’hygiène publique. Son fonctionnement sur un siècle permet, en outre, d’aborder les stratégies professionnelles des médecins, et d’éclairer sous un jour original et concret les rapports des praticiens, et au-delà, de leurs contemporains aux morts dont le culte est en plein essor. |

| Summary, etc. | The risk of burying people alive, emphasized by physicians of the xviiith century, has leaded to the early creation of a medical department for the death verification in Paris, since 1800. This department, soon backed by an inspection system, had to make sure that people were really dead when they were declared so at the town-hall by the family; and, gradually, also to survey public health, make statistics and teach the Parisians how to deal with corpses. His working brings much information about professional strategies of the physicians; it also throws the light on the relations between them –and moreover the people– and the dead, which worship is growing at the same time. |
