| Summary, etc. | Les différences régionales ont toujours été présentes dans l’histoire socioéconomique de l’Italie, et elles ont profondément marqué la démographie de chaque région. La mortalité maternelle compte parmi ces différences, dans son rapport aux dépenses de santé publique, aux sages femmes, au rôle social de la femme, à l’analphabétisme et l’incroyance en la science médicale, et au statut socioéconomique.Le but de cet article est précisément d’éclairer les différentiels régionaux de mortalité maternelle en Italie entre 1887 et 1955, ainsi que leur rôle dans le déclin d’un tel phénomène. L’analyse utilise les statistiques officielles sur les causes de décès ; ces statistiques commencent à couvrir tout le territoire national en 1887.L’étude montre que les régions italiennes du Sud présentent les plus faibles valeur de mortalité maternelle, surtout au début de la période étudiée, probablement à cause du taux d’emploi féminin dans les industries, inférieur à celui des régions du Nord, et à cause d’une tendance plus forte à l’accouchement à domicile, qui peut réduire le risque d’infections, étant donné les très forts taux de mortalité due à cette cause documentés dans les maternités avant l’introduction de techniques antiseptiques. |

| Summary, etc. | Regional differences have always been persistent in the socioeconomic history of Italy, profoundly impacting and shaping the demographic pattern of each region. Maternal mortality, with its strong connections with public health expenditure, midwifery, women social role, illiteracy and disbelief in medical science, and socioeconomic status, is certainly among them.The aim of this article is precisely to shed some light on the regional differentials in maternal mortality in Italy between 1887 and 1955, and their role in shaping the overall decline of such a phenomenon. The analysis makes use of the official statistics on causes of death that started to cover the entire national territory just in 1887.The study demonstrates that the Italian southern regions presented the lowest values of maternal mortality, especially at the beginning of the period studied, likely on account of the lower female employment rate in industries with respect to northern regions, and the higher propensity of home delivery, which may reduce the risk of puerperal infections, given the very high mortality rates for that cause documented in maternity hospitals before the introduction of antisepsis techniques. |
