Summary, etc. | RésuméAu mois de janvier 2009, les trois dernières salles de cinéma du Cameroun ont successivement fermé leurs portes. Si, dès 1973, l’État camerounais a tenté d’accompagner la structuration du secteur avec la création d’un fonds de développement de l’industrie cinématographique, l’absence de politique volontariste freine le développement d’une véritable industrie. Partant de ce constat, l’auteur revient sur l’histoire du cinéma camerounais pris entre la dépendance économique du secteur de la production vis-à-vis du Nord et la mainmise des sociétés étrangères sur les circuits de distribution et d’exploitation. Toutefois, au-delà des quelques coproductions internationales exemplaires mais trop rares, la nouvelle génération profite aujourd’hui de l’outil numérique pour conquérir une véritable indépendance économique. |

Summary, etc. | A History of Motion Picture Production in CameroonIn January 2009, the last three movie theatres in Cameroon closed their doors, one after the other. While Cameroon has tried to structure its motion picture industry since 1973, creating a development fund for it, a lack of political will has held back the growth of a viable industry. Starting with this observation, the author reviews the history of Cameroon’s motion picture industry, where production was caught between economic dependency on rich countries and foreign companies’ stranglehold on distribution and operations. However, going beyond a few exemplary but too-rare international co-productions, a new generation is using digital filmmaking equipment to gain genuine economic independence. |
