| Summary, etc. | Sydney est la plus grande aire métropolitaine d’Australie, avec ses quatre millions d’habitants, soit un cinquième de la population du pays. Elle est tout à fait exemplaire d’un modèle urbain hybride, avec d’un côté une dynamique d’accession à la propriété d’un pavillon support d’un étalement urbain de type nord-américain et, de l’autre, une division sociale atténuée couplée à une valorisation des espaces les plus proches du downtown, caractéristiques d’une métropole européenne. Par ailleurs, l’article explore l’histoire et les effets de la gouvernance spatiale métropolitaine, en montrant les espoirs mais aussi et surtout les limites des multiples tentatives de planification urbaine à Sydney, afin de réduire ou de contrôler l’étalement spatial. |

| Summary, etc. | Evolution of the metropolitan governance in Sydney Sydney is the largest metropolitan area in Australia with 4,1 millions inhabitants : 20 % of the Australian population. Sydney is a perfect example of a hybrid urban model. On the one hand, the metropolitan morphology is characterised by the low density of housing (property owners) in the suburbs like in North-American cities. On the other hand, the mitigated social polarization and the attractive inner city remind the profile of European cities. This paper investigates the history and the impacts of the spatial metropolitan governance with the aim of showing the limits of several tries of the urban planning action to reduce or control the urban sprawl. |
