| Summary, etc. | L’histoire du Sahara occidental est aussi contestée que son territoire. Tout en resituant l’enjeu qu’a représenté l’exploitation des mines de phosphate dans le conflit pour le Sahara occidental, cet article s’attache à montrer le rôle essentiel que ces mines ont joué dans l’affirmation d’une identité et d’une communauté politique sahraouie. L’émergence d’une classe ouvrière dans les cités minières et les liens tissés entre les mineurs et la résistance indépendantiste permettent en effet de comprendre la formation et la cristallisation d’une identité politique dont les actes de sabotage perpétrés dans les mines ont constitué des événements fondateurs. Des événements dont la mémoire demeure prégnante et agissante, aujourd’hui encore, dans les camps de réfugiés sahraouis en Algérie. Cet article s’attache ainsi à montrer comment les mineurs et le contexte minier ont joué un rôle central dans la manière dont s’est façonnée l’identité politique sahraouie dans sa lutte et ses revendications pour accéder à la souveraineté. |

| Summary, etc. | The history of Western Sahara is as contested as its territory. While repositioning the issue of the exploitation of phosphate in the conflict for Western Sahara, this article focuses on the essential role that these mines have played in the construction of the Sahrawi identity and political community. The emergence of a working class in mining cities, and the links forged between the miners and the pro-independence resistance, make it possible to understand the formation and crystallization of a political identity whose acts of sabotage in the mines have been founding events. These events’ memory remains active, even today, in the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria. This article aims to show how miners and the mining context have played a central role in the way in which the Sahrawi political identity has been shaped in its claims to sovereignty. |
