| Summary, etc. | Cet article cherche à comprendre comment des individus en situation de rendre compte de leur trajectoire résidentielle mobilisent la forme du récit biographique, ponctué de catégories géographiques génériques et de lieux spécifiques. L’article porte tout spécialement son attention sur quatre de ces catégories (« ville », « village », « campagne » et « montagne ») dont on montrera qu’elles sont mobilisées selon des modes différents. L’approche par les catégories géographiques permet d’éclairer sous un jour nouveau la question de l’histoire résidentielle et des choix résidentiels et de suggérer que les récits biographiques produits en situation d’enquête se doublent de la production de configurations géographiques. |

| Summary, etc. | Do we inhabit geographical categories? City, countryside and mountain within narratives on biographical trajectories This paper explores how individuals describe their residential trajectory. Based on more than 50 interviews with residents from three municipalities in Switzerland, it seeks to understand how individuals combine geographical categories and specific places, in the narrative of their residential history. The most frequent categories cited are “city”, “countryside” and “village”. They are used and characterized in different ways. By contrast, though all interviewees live in the mountain zone as defined by Swiss administration, “Mountain” is a relevant category only for some interviewees, mostly attracted in their residential area by leisure opportunities. Approaching residential narratives through geographical categories sheds new light on dwelling and housing issues. |
