| Summary, etc. | La recherche sur les petites villes en France a évolué depuis les années 1950. Le postulat de départ est que cette dernière a suivi les évolutions de la recherche en géographie de façon générale. Elle s’est d’abord focalisée sur des études monographiques, régionales et rurales, pour se préoccuper davantage, surtout dans les deux dernières décennies, de problématiques socioculturelles, dans un cadre de plus en plus urbain. Bien que restant le parent pauvre de la recherche en géographie urbaine, la petite ville a toujours été étudiée et elle est aujourd’hui de plus en plus choisie comme territoire d’étude sur des problématiques transversales de géographie et d’aménagement. De territoire « singulier », elle est progressivement devenue un territoire « témoin » en intégrant davantage les champs de questionnements plus habituels de la géographie des villes (stratégies économiques, mutations sociales, valorisation patrimoniale, politique culturelle, urbanité, etc.). |

| Summary, etc. | The place of small towns in geographical research in France : From simple monograph to test territory Research on small towns in France has changed since the 1950s. The hypothesis is that its evolution is quite similar to that of geographical research in general. Papers were initially focused on monographic, regional and rural studies. Subsequently, over the past two decades, they have more frequently examined socio-cultural issues, in an increasingly urban environment. Even if research on secondary towns has never received the attention it deserves in urban geography, the small town has always been studied and is nowadays considered more and more as an interesting territory for cross-analysis of geography and space planning. Starting as a “singular” territory, it has become a “test” territory through the integration of urban issues such as economic strategies, social changes, heritage development or cultural policies. |
