| Summary, etc. | Le conflit en République démocratique du Congo a radicalement changé au cours des cent cinquante dernières années. Cet article retrace ces transformations, en les mettant en relation avec les changements dans les structures sociales et politiques, ainsi que dans les normes et les idéologies. Contrairement à la répression de la période coloniale et du début de la période Mobutu, l’État a plus récemment évolué en symbiose avec les groupes armés, les élites politiques et les officiers militaires ayant acquis des intérêts dans les conflits. Par rapport aux épisodes précédents de violence à grande échelle, dont aucun n’a duré plus de quelques années, le conflit actuel dure depuis plus de deux décennies et a profondément remodelé la société. Plus récemment, la mobilisation armée est devenue politiquement opportune pour certains, et un moindre mal pour d’autres, transformant la mobilisation armée en une fin en soi. |

| Summary, etc. | Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has changed dramatically over the past 150 years. This article traces these transformations, relating them to shifts in social and political structures, as well as in norms and ideologies. In contrast with the repression of the colonial and early Mobutu period, the state has more recently evolved symbiotically with armed groups as political elites and military officers have developed vested interests in conflict. Compared with previous episodes of large-scale violence, none of which lasted for more than several years, the current conflict has lasted for over two decades, deeply reshaping society. More recently, armed mobilization has become politically expedient for some, and the lesser of evils for others, transforming armed mobilization into an end in itself. |
