| Summary, etc. | Depuis les années 2000, les publications sur le cinéma et la géographie se sont multipliées. Le cinéma intéresse les sciences sociales en général, en ce qu’il donne accès à des systèmes de représentations collectives et que certains films constituent des références majeures de la culture populaire. Il intéresse en particulier la géographie. En effet, dès sa naissance, le cinéma s’inscrit dans une culture visuelle qui est proche de celle de la géographie. En fait, l’expérience cinématographique est essentiellement celle d’un déplacement. On peut distinguer quatre types d’espace cinématographique : diégétique, scénographique, pictural, et spectatoriel. L’analyse de leur complexe articulation est un enjeu majeur pour comprendre non seulement le cinéma mais aussi les spatialités des sociétés où les écrans sont omniprésents. Les géographes qui se sont intéressés au cinéma ont souvent adopté une posture proche des études filmiques, analysant, notamment en termes d’imaginaires géographiques, le film comme un objet immanent. Une géographie du cinéma pourrait aussi et en même temps être attentive aux conditions matérielles de sa production et de sa consommation, mettant en avant les interprétations variées qu’en font différents groupes de spectateurs, ainsi que les sensations et les émotions qu’ils ressentent. |

| Summary, etc. | Geography and the Movies: Ways of Use Since the 2000s, geography and the movies has been the topic of many publications. Cinema is an issue for social sciences in the sense that it gives an access to collective representations and that some movies became major references of popular culture. It is of particular concern for Geography. Since its very beginning, cinema belongs to a visual culture, which has much in common with Geography. Indeed, the cinematic experience has by essence to do with displacement. Geography could identify four types of cinematic space : diegetic, scenographic, pictorial and spectatorial. Analyzing the complex interlinking between these is of major importance not only for understanding cinema but also for understanding the spatialities of societies where screens are everywhere. Geographers working on cinema often follow an approach much similar to film studies, considering the movies as immanent objects, and analyzing them in terms of imaginative geographies. A more comprehensive geography of cinema could also bring attention to the material conditions of the production and the consumption of the movies, showing how diverse audiences may provide different interpretations, and feel different sensations and emotions. |
