520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Between 1975 and 1984, Bruce Springsteen has created in his songs, based on the experience of living in small American towns in the era of economic deregulation, a sociospatial universe of his own. These songs, the paper agues, are nostalgic serenades of an America in social crisis and economic transformation. They also focus on the specific region of New Jersey which is used as a symbol of the failure of the American dream. Therefore three conclusions can be made : a geographical perspective is useful to understand the relation between nostalgia and place ; an analysis of songs’lyrics can be a major tool for understanding the changes and developments of our societies, politically, socially and spatially, therefore it usefully comes as a complement to geographical field research on nostalgia in contemporary cities ; the political dimension of nostalgia can be asserted and should be taken into account as produced by the entanglement of personal life and sociospatial transformations. |
