| Summary, etc. | The Social Contexts of Denunciations of Jews during the OccupationOf the 300,000 Jews declared in the census ordered by French and German authorities during the Occupation, half were in Paris or its close suburbs. This is where persecution and in particular, anti-Jewish denunciations, affected Jews most intensely, often occurring in long-established environments. The systematic exploitation of judicial archives- at Liberation, 240 individuals were judged for denouncing Jews by the Cour de justice de la Seine (Court of Justice of the Seine)- allow us access to the unknown reality of anti-Jewish denunciations between 1940-1944, which allowed for denunciations for the sake of openly expressing, in social contexts where the presence of Jews- deemed conflictual- led to antisemitic acts and revenge. In his continued hate, in his self-assurance without limits, with the pressure, direct and insistent, that he was able to apply on the institutions responsible for repression, this type of denouncer was surely the most daunting: he often managed to achieve his goal, provoking arrests and deportations. |
