| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | David as a Revolutionary Painter : through the German Eye . The German view of Jacques-Louis David's art is perceptibly different from the French perception: if the « revolutionary » aspect interests also in France, it is perceived in Germany as a typical emanation of French Enlightment Philosophy and a characteristic aspect of national psychology. David, as the Painter of the Revolution, becomes therefore an emblematical figure of French art and philosophy, on which, to a large extent, is found and constructed the German discourse on French art, which lasts until the first decades of the 20th century. David becomes thus the representative, not only of France, but also of the ideas of Enlightment and the Revolution and of modern art against which a certain idea of German art and identity has progressively been elaborated. |
