| Summary, etc. | L’étude des manuscrits du « for privé » permet d’approcher cette dimension essentielle qui touche au vécu des individus. Ces écrits fournissent l’occasion de mieux comprendre les mentalités à l’œuvre à une période donnée, en l’occurrence en cette fin du XVIIIe siècle. Ce sont trente-six témoignages émanant de gens d’Église issus du clergé séculier qui ont pu être rassemblés. En définitive, ces documents témoignent d’aventures personnelles. En cela, le monde des émigrés apparaît donc dans toute sa diversité et sa complexité. Cependant, ils permettent d’éclairer le devenir d’un groupe en particulier. Longtemps considérés, soit comme des martyrs, soit comme de dangereux contre-révolutionnaires, ces clercs apparaissent tout d’abord comme des hommes qui ressentent des émotions souvent contradictoires. Pour l’essentiel, ils ont cherché surtout à survivre dans un environnement étranger et parfois hostile. Mais l’exil leur a donné également l’occasion de se confronter à l’altérité. |

| Summary, etc. | A study of the manuscripts of “for privé” enables researchers to examine this essential dimension touching the daily lives of individuals. These writings provide a better understanding of the mentalities in a given period, notably at the end of the eighteenth century. This study uses thirty-six depositions from men of the Church, all from the regular clergy. These documents chronicle their private experiences and adventures. Thus the world of emigres appears in all its diversity and complexity. In addition, these manuscripts illuminate the future of a particular group. Long considered as martyrs or as dangerous counterrevolutionaries, these ecclesiastics appear above all as men often beset with contradictory emotions. On the whole, they struggled to survive in a foreign and often hostile environment. But exile gave them the opportunity to encounter different people. |
