| Summary, etc. | L’influence de la pensée contre-révolutionnaire et traditionaliste sur les interprétations catholiques de la Révolution est bien connue. On se propose néanmoins de reprendre à nouveaux frais le dossier en s’attachant tout spécialement aux catholiques libéraux autour de 1848. Ce courant se définit ordinairement par la volonté de réconcilier le catholicisme avec la société post-révolutionnaire. La période semble pertinente puisqu’elle ravive le souvenir de la Grande Révolution. L’analyse montre qu’il existe finalement des appréciations différentes au sein d’un groupe d’hommes d’affinités semblables. Certains (Montalembert), quoique ouverts aux réinterprétations contemporaines, restent profondément marqués par la tradition contre-révolutionnaire. D’autres, en revanche, souvent aujourd’hui oubliés (Charles Lenormant, Louis de Carné), révèlent l’existence d’une pensée, sinon d’une historiographie, qui rejette les thèses providentialistes classiques et se détache de la « légende noire ». Ces divergences témoignent de positions et de débats qui traversent l’historiographie conservatrice de la Révolution. |

| Summary, etc. | The influence of counterevolutionary and traditionalist thought on Catholic interpretations of the Revolution is well known. Yet, this theme will be reexamined by concentrating particularly on the liberal catholics of 1848. This movement is usually defined by the desire to reconcile Catholicism with a post-revolutionary society. The period seems pertinent, since it revives the memory of the Great Revolution. The analysis demonstrates the existence of different interpretations among men of similar affinities. Some like Montalembert, though open to contemporary reinterpretations, remained deeply marked by the counterrevolutionary tradition. Others, by contrast, often men now forgotten like Charles Lenormant, Louis de Carné, reveal the presence of a body of thought, if not a historiography, that rejects the classic providential thesis and the « black legend ». These differences attest to points of view and debats present in the conservative historiography of the Revolution. |
