| Summary, etc. | L’enjeu historiographique de cet article est de mesurer la dimension non verbale de la construction de l’identité bourgeoise à travers l’exemple de la famille Le Couteulx sur une période allant du xviie siècle au début du xixe siècle. La conversion de l’univers matériel en valeurs sociales identifiables interroge la « fluidité » de la norme et les mécanismes de l’ascension. Tous ne relèvent pas de la manifestation du statut social dans la sphère publique, mais de stratégies convergentes de préservation, de transmission, organisant la reproduction sociale et consacrant, au-delà de la Révolution, l’affirmation d’un ordre bourgeois. Par l’analyse des sièges sociaux, des pratiques de gestion du capital et des enjeux de l’anoblissement, on ébauche une description de la dynamique sociale qui échappe au langage des sources classiques du discours sur la mobilité. |

| Summary, etc. | The central historiographical issue that this article raises is how to measure the non-verbal dimension in the construction of a bourgeois identity within the Le Couteulx family from the seventeenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. The question of the conversion of the material world into identifiable social values depends on the « fluidity » of what constitutes « normal ». Everything cannot be revealed simply by the expression of social status in the public sphere ; in addition, others factors like the converging strategies of survival, of social reproduction, and of the affirmation, well beyond the Revolution, of a « bourgeois order » must be taken into account. By analyzing the head offices of companies, the practices of capital management, and the complexities of « anoblissement », it is possible to describe a social dynamic that eludes the « classical sources » of discourse on mobility. |
