| Summary, etc. | Trois batailles s’invitent à l’affiche des concerts parisiens entre 1789 et 1794. L’ouverture et l’entracte de la Bataille d’Ivry de Martini ne célèbrent plus à l’Opéra-Comique le sacre et la grandeur de Louis XVI, mais incarnent à travers l’expression d’une musique guerrière, le sentiment patriotique du moment. L’hymne et les chœurs « des Batailles » de Fleurus composés par Catel s’inscrivent dans les célébrations officielles des victoires de la Première coalition : le peuple s’en empare dans les concerts patriotiques organisés en plein air. La Bataille de Jemappes de Devienne est une symphonie descriptive et imitative inscrite aux concerts Feydeau. Partition hors du commun, celle-ci témoigne de la naissance d’une littérature parallèle pour le piano-forte destinée aux amateurs et aux élèves, très en vogue entre la Révolution française et la Restauration, composée de pièces militaires, historiques ou imitatives, qui donnent à entendre tout ce qui s’est passé sur le champ de bataille. |

| Summary, etc. | Three battles enter the program of Parisian concerts between 1789 and 1794. The ouverture and interludes of Martini’s Bataille d’Ivry no longer celebrate the coronation and the magnanimity of Louis XVI at the Opéra-Comique, but embody the patriotic sentiment of the moment through the expression of a war music. The hymn and the choruses of the Batailles de Fleurus composed by Catel form part of the official celebrations of the First Coalition victories: the people seize them in the patriotic concerts organized outdoors. The Bataille de Jemappes by Devienne is a descriptive and imitative symphony included in the Feydeau concerts. This extraordinary score gives an account of the birth of an alternative literature for the piano-forte intended for amateurs and students, very popular between the French Revolution and the Bourbon restoration and consisting of military, historical, or imitative pieces, which evokes all that happened on the battlefield. |
