520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The archaeological site of Etouvy / La Graverie (Calvados) – a xenodochium at a ford on the Vire?In the south-west of Calvados, the villages of Etouvy and La Graverie are located on either side of the Vire near a Roman road that crossed the river at a ford. The presence of a Roman settlement between the two villages is not certain but the existence of one dating from the High Middle Ages is more likely since La Graverie’s church was built on a necropolis with sarcophagi. As for Etouvy, it might be the vicus mentioned in the Vita S. Severii. The site in a narrow valley subject to flooding, the proximity of the two churches and links to several Norman abbeys raise the hypothesis of the presence of a high medieval xenodochium.
