520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Religious donations in Scotland in the 12th and 13th centuries - the example of ColdinghamshireDuring the 12th and 13th centuries, Scotland, albeit an independent country, experienced significant change under Anglo-Norman influence, including the spread of writing and of the ideas of the Gregorian reform. The study of the religious donations to Coldingham priory between 1095 and 1286, many of which originated from commoners, highlights a concern for the salvation of the donors’ souls and those of their families’ in every layer of society, as well as an attachment to their parish and to local saints. Besides, a precise analysis of the formulae used in the charters sheds light on the material obligations linked to the donations, and on the role of the Scottish crown in these transactions. Scottish particularities can be observed in the donations’ formulation, although some parallels can be drawn between the development of the formulae in Normandy and England, and in Scotland.
