520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The comparison of the Bayeux Tapestry with the contemporary written sources of the embroidered work highlights the important differences between these two means of communication. Some of these differences stem from the very nature of these means: the British and continental fighters are represented with the same weapons, it was difficult to differentiate them by their portrayal. The designers of the embroidery therefore chose to represent the men of William as knights armed with spears and the English infantrymen with swords, suggesting the idea of a clash between two armed forces of opposite natures. But the most important differences come from an ideological ambition or an aesthetic choice. Thus the Bayeux Tapestry makes no mention of the military intervention, however essential, of Harald Hardrada, nor the transfer of the Norman army from Dives-sur-Mer to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. On the other hand, the Tapestry offers a wealth of valuable information on subjects on which written sources do not say a word: civilian and military buildings, clothing, living conditions of armies in the field and mishaps of the Battle of Hastings.
