| Summary, etc. | Despite the existence of environmental inequalities, the ecological crisis concerns the human species as a whole. As such, it calls for the elaboration of a concept of species, currently absent from the theoretical repertoire of the social sciences. The aim of this article is to contribute to this elaboration. To this end, it will examine the links between two concepts: one from the social sciences, and in particular Marxism, the concept of need; the other from biology, the concept of ecological niche. Each of these concepts lies at the interface between nature and culture, forcing us to problematize the distinction between the two. At the same time, they give concrete expression to the way in which we might investigate the dynamics of the environmental crisis. Need and ecological niche are the potential foundations of a species concept for the social sciences. As we shall see, this concept is inseparable from the context of environmental crisis from which it emerges. |

| Summary, etc. | Même s’il existe des inégalités environnementales, la crise écologique concerne l’espèce humaine dans son ensemble. Elle suppose de ce fait l’élaboration d’un concept d’espèce à ce jour absent du répertoire théorique des sciences sociales. Cet article a pour objectif de contribuer à cette élaboration. Pour cela, il s’interrogera sur les liens entre deux concepts : l’un issu des sciences sociales, et en particulier du marxisme, le concept de besoin ; l’autre issu de la biologie, le concept de niche écologique. Se situant chacun à l’articulation de la nature et de la culture, ces concepts obligent à problématiser la distinction entre les deux. Ils permettent aussi de rendre concrète la manière dont on pourrait enquêter sur la dynamique de la crise environnementale. Le besoin et la niche écologique constituent les fondements potentiels d’un concept d’espèce opératoire pour les sciences sociales. Comme on le montrera, ce concept est indissociable du contexte de crise environnementale, d’où il émerge. |
