| Summary, etc. | Dans le cadre de la mobilisation de l’an II se pose la question des armes propres à des soldats de la liberté. Certains conventionnels tentent de créer une figure parallèle au fantassin combattant à la baïonnette : le marin abordeur. Cette figure a été récupérée sans distance critique par l’historiographie navale du XIXe siècle, dans le but de prouver l’incompétence des républicains en matière navale. En réalité, une étude de sources autres que parlementaires fait apparaître un profond intérêt des républicains pour l’artillerie navale. Ils s’efforcent de faire du canon une arme républicaine, notamment sous l’impulsion de Jeanbon Saint-André. Cela se traduit par des recherches militaires innovantes sur cette arme. Les résultats de la républicanisation de l’artillerie sont difficiles à dégager clairement des circonstances, notamment durant la bataille de Prairial, marquée par un contexte stratégique particulier. Cette républicanisation a probablement participé néanmoins à une brutalisation de l’affrontement. |

| Summary, etc. | In the mobilization of the year II lies the question as to which arms are appropriate for the soldiers of liberty. Certain among the Conventionnels attempted to create a figure parallel to that of the fantassin fighting with a bayonet : the boarding sailor. This figure, appropriated, uncritically, by the naval historiography of the nineteenth century sought to demonstrate the incompetency of republicans in naval matters. In fact, a study of sources other than parlementary documents reveals the deep interest republicans displayed for naval artillery. They tried to make the canon into a republican arm, notably under the impulse of Jeanbon Saint-André. This manifested itself by research seeking to improve military equipment. The results of the republicanization of the artillery are difficult to assess, notably during the battle of Prairial, marked as it was by a particular strategic setting. In the end, however, republicanization most probably contributed to brutalizing military conflict. |
