| Summary, etc. | RésuméMalgré son titre prometteur, le livre de 1874 de Franz Brentano, Psychologie du point de vue empirique, peut difficilement être considéré comme le point de départ de l’une ou l’autre des formes de ce que, de nos jours, on appelle « psychologie ». La notion d’intentionnalité, empruntée par Brentano à la scolastique médiévale, n’y joue pas un grand rôle. De la notion d’inconscient – qu’il rejette – Brentano ne discute sérieusement aucune des formes qu’elle avait dès cette époque chez les auteurs sérieux. Quant à la psychanalyse, elle ne lui emprunte à peu près rien, en dépit du fait que Freud ait suivi avec intérêt les leçons de Brentano à l’université de Vienne et qu’il y ait eu par la suite des relations personnelles, voire familiales entre les deux auteurs. |

| Summary, etc. | In spite of an apparently promising title, the book Franz Brentano published in 1874, Psychology form the empirical standpoint, can hardly be considered as the starting point of any of the forms of what is nowadays called “psychology”. The notion of intentionality, borrowed by Brentano from mediaeval scolastics, does not play in our psychology a prominent part. Rejecting the notion of unconscious, Brentano does not discuss the various forms taken at that time by this notion in the works of prominent authors. As for psychoanalysis, it takes almost nothing from Brentano, even though Freud attended Brentano’s lectures at the university of Vienna, and the fact that the two authors were acquainted personnaly with one another and shared family ties. |
