| Summary, etc. | L’Épiphanie ne pouvait guère laisser indifférents les hommes de la Révolution française, dès lors que ses liens avec la monarchie et le clergé catholique en faisaient une cible fort tentante pour la plume des amateurs de satires en tout genre. Au temps de la monarchie constitutionnelle, où l’arme de la dérision figure en bonne place dans le magasin aux accessoires de ceux qui s’en prennent aux rois en général, puis peu à peu au roi des Français, succède en 1792 une nouvelle ère, celle de la République. Que faire alors de cette désormais encombrante Fête des Rois, solidement ancrée dans les traditions et déjà objet d’intérêts commerciaux ? L’interdire, au risque de mécontenter une bonne partie des citoyens ? En changer simplement la dénomination ? En bouleverser de fond en comble la symbolique sans pour autant toucher au cœur de la réunion festive, autrement dit en laissant le hasard attribuer la fève, mais en substituant au roi un sans-culotte ? |

| Summary, etc. | Epiphany could scarcely leave the men of the Revolution indifferent. For with its links to the Monarchy and the Catholic clergy, it constituted a tempting target for the pen of satirists of every genre. During the Constitutional Monarchy, when the weapon of derision occupied a solid place in the arsenal of those who attacked Kings in general, and then, little by little, the King of the French, a new era emerged in 1792, that of the Republic. What was to be done from then on with this cumbersome Festival of Kings, solidly anchored in tradition and already the subject of commercial interest : prohibit it at the risk of upsetting a great number of citizens ? Simply change the name ? Completely reject the symbol without touching the heart of the festive occasion, in short, leave to chance the selection of the figurine, but replace the representation of the King by that of a sans culotte ? |
