| Summary, etc. | La bibliographie relative à la marine britannique au cours du « long » XVIIIe siècle est abondante et ne cesse de croître. Pourtant, elle l’aborde presque exclusivement d’un point de vue national. Ce ne serait pas un problème en soi, étant donné que la marine est une institution nationale, si ce n’est que beaucoup de marins en son sein (au moins 14 % parmi ceux qui servaient à l’étranger, probablement) n’étaient ni Britanniques ni Irlandais. Cet article a pour objectif de montrer que la prise en compte de ce fait quand on étudie la marine peut avoir un impact significatif sur les débats historiographiques en cours, par exemple, au sujet des modalités de recrutement, des conditions de vie pendant le service ou, bien entendu, du patriotisme des marins. Notre but est de montrer que la marine est un exemple de sujet pour lequel une perspective transnationale peut être éclairante même dans un contexte historique qui semble peu s’y prêter. |

| Summary, etc. | The « long » eighteenth-century British Navy is the subject of a vast and growing secondary literature. Almost all of it, however, has an exclusively national focus. This would not be problematic, given the Navy’s character as a national institution, were it not for the fact that many seamen serving in it – likely at least 14 % of crews in foreign stations – were not British or Irish. This article suggests that integrating them into the study of the Navy can significantly affect several ongoing historiographical debates, for example on the modalities of naval recruitment, or on the quality of life in the service, as well as, more predictably, discussions of seamen’s patriotism. The aim is to propose the Navy as an example of how a transnational perspective can be enlightening even in the most unlikely historical context. |
