| Summary, etc. | La science bibliographique et l’état de bibliographe préexistent à la Révolution mais sont définis de façon endogène et demeurent confinés dans un cercle étroit d’érudits. La fonction classificatoire de la bibliographie et le caractère encyclopédique des savoirs du bibliographe en font des outils privilégiés du traitement des acquisitions révolutionnaires. Ils sont mobilisés dès 1790 pour inventorier les bibliothèques ecclésiastiques nationalisées. Sous le Directoire, l’expert bibliographe est érigé en administrateur de la redistribution des livres pour former les bibliothèques publiques. Le processus d’institutionnalisation aboutit sous l’Empire à l’intégration de la rationalité bibliographique dans la gestion administrative de la production éditoriale. Cette extension du champ d’application, des usages et des finalités de la bibliographie lui confère une visibilité et une reconnaissance accrues, corrélats de l’institution d’une science officielle, non exclusive mais référentielle. |

| Summary, etc. | The science of bibliography and the state of bibliography existed before the Revolution. But it was defined in an endogenous way, and remained confined to the narrow circle of the erudite. The method of classification of bibliography, and the encyclopedic character of knowledge of the bibliographer were special tools for treating revolutionary acquisitions. These were mobilized from 1790 onwards to inventory the ecclesiastical libraries confiscated as national property. During the Directory, the expert bibliographer became an administrator in the redistribution of books for the formation of public libraries. This process of institutionalization culminated under the Empire by the integration of a bibliographic rationality into the administrative management of editorial production. This extension of the field of application, the usage and aims of bibliography endowed it with an increased visibility and appreciation, a correlate of an official science, not exclusive but referential. |
