| Summary, etc. | Robert Jolivet, abbé du Mont Saint-Michel, a longtemps été l’objet des anathèmes de l’historiographie française. Ce prélat avait déserté son abbaye avant même la signature du traité de Troyes, le 21 mai 1420, en prélude à une brillante carrière au sommet de l’administration du duc de Bedford, régent du royaume au nom du roi « de France et d’Angleterre ». Une relecture critique des sources permet de montrer que, loin de constituer une figure de la trahison, Robert Jolivet illustre la complexité des choix ouverts par la compromission du dauphin dans le meurtre de Montereau. Le ralliement au roi d’Angleterre de cet abbé beaucoup plus investi dans son abbaye qu’on ne l’a longtemps pensé, capitaine exemplaire de la place sous le règne effectif de Charles VI, constitue moins une trahison dictée par l’intérêt que l’aboutissement d’un parcours politique relativement cohérent. |

Rather than viewing his defection to Henry V as treason, we suggest he acted not, like a cynical traitor to advance his career, which was closely tied to the development of his Abbey, but after careful consideration of political legitimacy after the murder of Montereau. |
