| Summary, etc. | This article looks at the reconstruction of agricultural buildings after the Second World War in Calvados, a region in the northwest of Normandy that saw significant destruction of its rural areas. It aims to shed light on how these buildings were rebuilt and modernized, as well as the architectural and industrial doctrine that drove this reconstruction process. In Calvados, a third of all farms were destroyed or damaged. In order for agriculture to be re-established, livestock had to be rebuilt, mines had to be cleared, land had to be rehabilitated, equipment had to be replenished, and temporary housing had to be provided. The necessary recovery program was carried out between 1944 and 1947. The final reconstruction was overseen and financed by the French government. La Maison du Paysan acted as an intermediary for the state in Calvados, through the Coopérative de reconstruction de l’habitat rural (CRHR; Cooperative for the Reconstruction of Rural Housing). Committed to defending family-run farms, the CRHR supported the state’s modernization project. However, this sentiment was not necessarily shared by those whose farms had fallen victim to the war, so the CRHR and the architects involved were forced to accept all manner of functional, constructive, and aesthetic compromises. |

| Summary, etc. | Notre article porte sur la reconstruction du bâti agricole après la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans le Calvados, où les destructions rurales ont été particulièrement étendues. L’objectif est d’en comprendre les mécanismes de reconstitution et de modernisation ainsi que la doctrine architecturale et industrielle qui en était le moteur. Un tiers des exploitations a été détruit ou endommagé. Le relèvement de l’agriculture nécessita la reconstitution du cheptel, le déminage, la remise en état des terrains, la reconstitution du matériel et le relogement provisoire, programme qui fut exécuté de 1944 à 1947. La reconstruction définitive était encadrée par l’État qui la finançait. Dans le Calvados, la maison du Paysan fut un relais de l’action de l’État, par l’intermédiaire de la coopérative de reconstruction de l’habitat rural (CRHR). Engagée dans la défense de l’exploitation familiale, la CRHR adhérait au projet de modernisation voulu par l’État. Ce n’était pas forcément le cas des sinistrés, si bien que les architectes et la coopérative furent contraints d’accepter toutes sortes de compromis fonctionnels, constructifs et esthétiques. |
